What is Zed Indexing?

In Perform: Part 2 Andrew mentions something called zed indexing...at least that's what the captions pick up. What the heck is Zed indexing? Thanks!

allows stuff to appear in front of each other. (I can't remember offhand if low z or high z is near or far). x is horizontal. y is vertical. z is depth.
