What's "Delimiter?" Something that un-limits things? o.O

I hear "delimiter" but not an explanation. Too lazy to google... is it something that takes limits off something else?

A delimiter in Python is a character or set of characters used to separate items or values in a string. It is a boundary that marks the end of one item and the beginning of another.
