What's the difference between {% %} and {{ }}?

in Django templates {{ }} are used to evaluate variables and {% %} are Django templates tags for commands such as block, if, for, with, comment, etc.

So {{ }} will print out the contents of the thing but {% %} will call the thing as a function, arguments and then print out the result?

Yes, or at least it will try to. Mixing up {{ }} with {% %} creates some interesting errors!
