what's wrong with my PHP code utilizing a for loop?

<?php

$currentyear = date('F j, Y, g:i a');

for ($year = $currentyear - 100;++year <= $currentyear;) { echo $year . "<br />\n"; }

?>

i get this error in php: Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '<=' (T_IS_SMALLER_OR_EQUAL), expecting '[' in /home/treehouse/workspace/forloop.php on line 5

I don't know PHP very well, but I got rid of error by adding a $ to ++year in for loop.
