When I copy the title page from teehanlax to paste it in my blank sketch document it wont copy any of the features and just leaves me with a grey rectangle.

Pretty much covered all I needed to in the header

you need to select the entire item you want. just clicking on the navbar or whatever and copying will only copy the piece of the item you click on (every box, button, piece of text, and background is separate). In your case you clicked the background rectangle and copied that. You need to click and drag a selection box around the entire thing you want to copy to select everything then copy and paste.
