when I go to "mysite".com/wp-admin it takes me to my dashboard. Is this a problem?

what do I need to do in order to make sure the database is setup correctly?

If /wp-admin takes you to your dashboard you are all setup and good to go!

That's good. If you mean because it auto-logs you in, it's because WP is smart. If anybody else tried it, they would have to log in first. You can test this by opening an "incognito" tab on your browser, and go that URL. You'll be greeted by your log in form.
