When I use the "group selection tool" and click multiple times to increase my selection of objects, the shapes do not visibly get highlighted beyond my first selection - does anyone know why this is the case?

Do I need something turned on in the tool bar?

I had this same issue. The easiest way of dealing with this is to deselect everything, and then you'll find that it follows as it shows in the video.

To deselect, go to the menu bar and choose 'Select' -> 'Deselect', or use the keyboard shortcut command + shift + a (I'm not familiar with windows, but would imagine the comparable shortcut is ctrl + shift + a).
