Where to handle the API keys within an Android App?

My intention is to "hide" the keys in order to do not be shared with anyone that is not involve into the development of my app, in nuts, when we are developing applications using Rails or any other languages we can use things like environment variables, perhaps, there is something similar? or what is the approach that people does in this scenarios?
