Why are my images disappearing from the "images" media field after I press "update" for each portfolio piece?

Everything else seems to be working. The text description is showing up for each portfolio piece.

I click "add media", select the image, enter the settings (size: full-size; link to: none). As soon as I press the update button, the image disappears from the editing field. I view the specific portfolio piece in the browser and only the text description is displayed.

Is this a custom field or the normal content area?
