Why create new variable - randNum ?

We can basically use document.write( randomNumber(upper)+" "); and the code would work. Is it just so we can actually store it into a new var for future possible purposes?

You're right, the randNum variable is not needed if you call the random function from inside the document.write.

You will probably see other opportunities for optimization in the courses since breaking things down into individual steps can make the process easier to understand than the optimized version.
