why did we add 0deg to our background in the style-sheet?

If the degrees go clockwise, shouldn't the white color go from top to bottom?

The degree is for the "to" direction, so "0deg" means "to top" ("bottom to top").

So if we would not have put the "0deg" it would be the default ("top to bottom")?

You are correct. The default is "180deg" or "to bottom".
