why do i have to use else if

do i have to add an "else if" statement ? why cant i just use this with out else if

function max (a > b) {
  if (a>b) {
    return a;
  } else {
    return b;
  }
}
console.log(max(20,30));

You do not need to use else or else if.

function max (a, b) {
  if (a>b) {
    return a;
  }
  return b;
}
console.log(max(20,30));

The parameters in the first line should be separated by a comma rather than >.
