Why do we set the request codes to negative values?

In this video, we set REQUEST_CODE_RESOLUTION to -100 and REQUEST_CODE_AVAILABILITY to -101, and the teacher says we should make them unique, but doesn't explain why we picked these particular values. Do they need to be negative values? Can they not be something like 1 and 2?

Thanks.
