Why do we write this piece of code?

I don't understand why we are writing this piece of code. Can anyone please explain it to me?

var color = $(".selected").css("background-color");

There should be an element with the class of .selected in your html. The point of this code is to grab the background color of that element and store it in the JS variable color.
