Why is it "a" in the "a:link"? Any special meaning it stands for?

Wondering if the "a" in "a:link" has any special meaning. Thinking it might be easier to remember if I know the meaning.

a stands for anchor ... just think of it as a mnemonic image - like throwing an anchor to a specific endpoint ...
