Why is it sometimes necessary to add “background-repeat: no-repeat” to the styling of an element?

If you have an element that is using a background, and the background is not as wide as the element, it will repeat the background image by default. This might not be desirable so you might need to set the background to not-repeat and then size it to cover the entire element.
