Why is res class a requirment to use findViewByID?

So I get that findViewById() has the requirement to use the resource class to find the id you are looking for. But why did the android studio developers decide to make this a requirement, to use findViewById()? Was it too prevent human error such as typing the wrong number or is it for the sake of convenience?
