Why isn't this working?

It's driving me crazy.

You need to select all of Article's instances using Article.objects.all(), you'll get QuerySet of all of the objects in the database. Utilizing the all() method accomplishes that.

def article_list(request):
    article = Article.objects.all()
    article_num = len(article)
    return HttpResponse("There are {} articles".format(article_num))
