I was able to get it to work by initializing name with the value "null" and then using readLine with a string parameter for a prompt. I was unable to get it to work without the string parameter.

String name = null;
name = console.readLine("Name: ");

thanks are you always up this late helping coders

dante white, you should use equal sign(=) instead of coma (,) after String name. and you should also prompt the user i.e ("what is your name") this will allow the user to input his/her name. thanks.

String name=console.readLine("what is your name");
