PHP Building Websites with PHP Contact Form & Sending Email Named Routes

Why not just use "/" instead of "{{ baseUrl() }}" and "contact" instead of "{{ siteUrl('/contact') }}"?

I'm sure I'm missing the point... Can anyone explain why to use

  <a href="{{ baseUrl() }}" class="selected">About</a>
  <a href="{{ siteUrl('/contact') }}">Contact</a>

in main.twig when

  <a href="/" class="selected">About</a>
  <a href="/contact">Contact</a>

has the same effect?

If your site is not the root folder, starting at "/" will not work, and typically this is the case during development--the site is not the root folder.
