Why not use the wordpress admin function to make a child theme?

When a theme is installed, you can click on the button to make a childtheme. So much easier! Or what am I missing? I should add that I have the plugin 'Child themify' installed.

That's an interesting thought.

I'm not sure how advanced that plugin is. I think the idea behind child themes is that you make very specific and custom changes to a theme, which is by it's very nature a custom and deliberate designed web layout.

I suppose you're right, the plugin helps to safeguard a site from developer's changes. But I don't know if the child theme files created by this plugin can be altered.
