Why `this.commentForm`?

Why do we have to reference this.commentForm in the onSubmit function when the function gets passed commentForm as a parameter?

The page reloads instead of submitting form if we change 'this.commentForm' to 'commentForm'. Might have to do something with the 'this' keyword in JavaScript?
