why won't document.querySelector select 'input'?

I've also tried getElementById and querySelectorAll.

app.js
const inputValue = document.querySelector('input');
index.html
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
    <head>
      <title>DOM Manipulation</title>
    </head>
    <link rel="stylesheet" href="style.css" />
    <body>
      <div id="content">
        <label for="linkText">Link Text:</label>
        <input type="text" id="linkText" value="sample text">
        <p class="info"></p>
      </div>
    <script src="app.js"></script>
  </body>
</html>

As the code is now, it does select the input element.
But the instructions ask you to assign the value and not the element itself.
