why wont this exercise let me add classes?

there are 5 li elements in my html document, 3 of which are nested within a ul in my nav element. One of those li has a class of .selected. My task is to store only the 3 li elements that are in my nav into a javascript variable. My issue is this, I can't add anything to my html, if I could I would simply add the same class to the desired li elements and use getElementsByClassName or querySelectorAll to grab them.

js/app.js
let navigationLinks = document.querySelector('nav.selected ');
navigationLinks += document.querySelector('[herf=about.html] ');
navigationLinks += document.querySelector('[herf=contact.html] ');
let galleryLinks;
let footerImages;
