Won't display error message on site

Im using my own DB in phpmyadmin But this won't display any error messages on my site if i change any table names Is there a typo im missing or mysql as a different getMessage() function?

function get_project_list() {
    include 'db.php';
    try {
        return $conn->query("SELECT project_id, title, category FROM projects");
    } catch(Exception $e) {
        echo "Error!: " . $e->getMessage() . "</br>";
        return false;
