Workspaces works fine as a text editor, and you can use something like Notepad or TextEdit (on a Mac). As long as you save your files correctly, these programs won't cause you problems. However, using a program like Atom (which is free) is helpful because it automatically adds quotation marks and closing tags when you need them, and highlights certain things in different colors to make them stand out. Other programs do even more things like that to further help you. I find that when I'm working on Treehouse, it is easier to use Workspaces since some of the content is already loaded there, but your preference may vary.
