wp_enqueue_style

When using the wp_enqueue_styles function is it customary to use a alias name for the stylesheet being called or is it necessary. In other words the function is passed ('main_css' , 'get_template_directory_uri().'/style.css'); instead I would have intuitively used ('style.css', 'get_template_directory_uri().'/style.css'); I'm just curious.
