CSS Foundations - Second Edition

Hey everyone,

Guil, one of our Treehouse teachers, has been working very hard to update our CSS topic and it's just about done! Early next month, CSS Foundations - Second Edition is going to replace two Deep Dives with updated information.

In 30 days, we're going to retire CSS Foundations and CSS3. When that happens, CSS Foundations - Second Edition will simply be renamed to CSS Foundations. If you want to hold on to the old CSS videos, you're more than welcome to download them, but make sure you do it soon!

I realize that this is a little bit confusing. If it doesn't make sense, don't worry about it. :) All it means is that we're updating our CSS courses and making them even more awesome!

If you have any questions, feel free to reply to this thread and either myself or Guil will be happy to help you out.

All the best, Nick Pettit

hi I don't know if this is the right forum to ask but how do you create an inverted radius on on an element?

Hi Wade Thomas,

You should post this as a new question. Click the "Start Discussion" button to create a new post. I'm not sure if negative border-radii are possible, but I'm sure someone will be happy to help out if they know the answer. :)

What happens to the badges we earned in CSS Foundations and CSS3? Will they remain? I like mine :3

Hey Philipp,

Great question! Yes, you'll be able to keep the badges that you've earn so far, even if the content is retired.

Nick

oh thank goodness :) I would be upset for sure.

So we have 30 days to download the existing CSS foundation videos?

Thanks for the heads-up Nick.

Good to see Treehouse developing new, updated content but at the same time I'll use the next 30 days to go through both those Deep Dives before they disappear. Will then work through the new content as "revision" plus learn a whole new bunch of CSS tricks.

Excited!

Should I continue with CSS Foundations And CSS3 or should I wait for the updated information?

Elliott - Start on the 2nd edition now, no need to wait.

I noticed one of the badges under the second edition isn't scheduled to be released until June and another sometime in May. If the first edition is going to be gone after the 4th of May will the rest of the sections be finished before the first edition is removed?

Hi Viola,

Great question. Indeed, there are four remaining badges in CSS Foundations - Second Edition that will be released in April, May, and June. We decided that our old content was outdated enough that it was better to make the transition now than wait another few months. However, everything should finish up very soon. Thank you for your patience!

Nick

Guil really needs to simplify his approach! Nick Pettit I actually had to go back to the old CSS course, because it was easier for follow :(

Hi AJ Zawawi,

Can you be more specific? For example, which stages and videos did you find hard to follow, and why? I'm sure Guil Hernandez would be interested to hear your feedback.

Nick

I'm only at the point of the selectors videos, but I've basically given up on trying to follow along and create the files and practice like I was able to do in the HTML adventure.

IMO, the videos move too quickly back and forth between screens to be able to keep up. There is not enough prompting such as 'now we will save and go back and refresh'.

I'm not sure if the goal is to allow the viewer the ability to follow along or not, but I would just keep in mind that for a person who is new to a topic it is very difficult to get something out of watching an experienced programmer do their thing and bounce around at light speed.

I'm even still having trouble keeping up without trying to type out the work myself.

Phil Perna - Personally I don't think you should try to "keep up" typing out code as the teacher is typing it out on screen. I propose in instead that you should always just watch the video and take notes on the important concepts and the syntax of the code being taught.

The way I think of it, is that the videos are for absorbing knowledge and the code challenges are for applying that knowledge.

Remember, coding is about learning to solve problems not transcribing code the teacher is dictating in a video.

You can read other users thoughts on the matter in this great thread about taking notes vs following along in a code editor while watching videos

Thanks for the quick response and forum link. I just want to be clear that I think Treehouse is an awesome resource and you guys are doing a great job.

For me personally I retain next to nothing when I watch someone else type code. Following along gives me the ability to be active and keep my attention span.

I can try to take notes to stay active and see if it's a better fit for the Treehouse format. It's just way more fun to do the code and then see the work appear in Chrome.

I began feeling lost in the selectors video. Too much info presented in a short span. Don't know if it's just me!

Great courses team treehouse!

Same here. I'm going through the CSS deep dive right now and it's getting a little difficult to stay focused.

Nick,

I just finished the available badges, and I'd like to offer a different opinion than AJ.

In my experience, Guil had an excellent teaching style that was both rigorous and engaging. Kudos to the team for allowing me to easily complete the course in 2 days.

Looking forward to the final few badges.

Hey Everyone,

"2nd Edition" is now officially up as CSS Foundations.

AJ Zawawi - Both "Selectors" stages are pretty thorough –– there definitely was a lot to cover. You'll notice that the rest of the stages are broken up into more digestible bits. Feel free to ping me in the forum, or send an email to help@teamtreehouse if you're ever feeling stuck on a topic.

Jon Harris - Nice work! Thank you for the kind words :)

Hi Wade Thomas,

Currently, an inverted radius isn't possible with CSS. But, border-corner-shape is in the works, which does just that. :)
