Extra credit?

Hi,

I've just completed the first stage of the "Build a simple PHP App" and the last bit is an extra code challenge. I have completed it ('cause I've tested the code I wrote in my browser), but even 'tho I seem to have "passed" the challenge (or should that be parsed?) it doesn't seem to recognise that I have done so. How does the extra credit get granted? What's the story?

I was confused on this point as well. If there is going to be "extra credit" that lacks interactivity with Treehouse then perhaps they shoud put it somewhere else. And actually, it would be nice to have a resource with lots of different prompts to work on.

you dont get "credit" for extra credit. it does not reward you any extra points or badges. The extra credit acts more as a "prompt" to challenge yourself.

The reward for extra credit is your own understanding by putting the skills from the course into practice. There's no acknowledgement or checking from Treehouse for doing it. Depending on the course they could be useful examples or mini projects to show off your work on a blog/forum.

Agreed, the 'extra credit' title is confusing. Maybe describing these extended activities with a phrase like 'test yourself' or 'personal challenge' would be clearer. The way this information is presented in the deep dive overview lists does imply that it is an automated part of the Treehouse experience.

Does anyone know if the best way to give this feedback is through the Support feature?

I think there should be at least a recognition that you have successfully completed an "extra credit" task via site feedback, if not extra points. Not an extra badge, but extra points, which could then go towards maybe an "above & beyond" version of a badge. I get the increased understanding being it's own reward, but it should be at least acknowledged in the interface somehow.

How would successful completion of the task be detected? The extra credit often involves work that could have a unique solution from every student (i.e. not a simple correct/incorrect that a computer can mark).

Fair enough. But in those cases where it was detectable (as in this case with an extra code challenge) it should be recognised. And maybe extra credit work could be submitted to tutors for verification - but that may be a bit much work for them and getting beyond the scope/remit of the site.
