Sass removed from front-end development?

I've been working on the front-end development track, and I was informed that with an update to the track, Sass Basics is being removed. Since I'm currently in the Sass course, and it seems really cool and useful, I'm curious why it's being removed from the track.

I also wonder why the new JavaScript course isn't being incorporated into the track. I still see Jim's old course there. Seems like a logical move, while the Sass removal doesn't seem as logical.

From Dave McFarland in another thread..

"We won't be changing the track until a second JavaScript course -- Loops, Arrays and Objects -- comes out in 2 months. At that point we'll replace Introduction to Programming and JavaScript Foundations with these 2 new courses.

Because JS Foundations covers a few things not found in the JS Basics course, we don't want to remove it until we've added another new JS course to cover those things too."

Although I'd like to know about the Sass course removal too.. I've been told by another web developer it's good to know..

Hey everyone,

Great question! We removed Sass Basics from the Front-End Development Track for several reasons:

  1. We're constantly creating new material, so content curation is important. We don't want any of our Tracks to get too long for Treehouse students to manage, so we decided to remove it for now.
  2. Sass Basics is already in the Web Design Track, and we think it fits better there.
  3. As always, we're working on new features and enhancements to Treehouse. Some of these features are related to Tracks, so this decision will make more sense in hindsight.

Across the industry, the scope of "front-end development" is extremely broad, and you could probably make a compelling argument as to why one topic or another fits into the category (like Sass). However, we have to draw the line somewhere, otherwise it's too easy to include increasingly tangental skills. Like I said, some upcoming feature releases will make this decision seem a lot more natural and sensible, but presently we're just trying to manage the length of the Track.
