Treehouse Guest TeacherSmells Like Bakin' is Being Retired from Tracks
Times are a changin'. All the Smells Like Bakin' website projects are being retired from tracks. That's:
Both Build a Simple Website and Build a Responsive Website are being replaced by Nick Pettit's How to Make a Website and Build an Interactive Website is being replaced by my jQuery Basics.
If you're in the middle of one of the old courses you can still complete them in the Library but we recommend you use the newer material in your Track.
We'll be rolling out the changes to the tracks in the next 24 hours.
Andrew Chalkley
Treehouse Guest TeacherUp to you. It may be a bit jarring going back and forth like that. But you may need a rest from CSS :)
Mark Lavar
1,903 PointsI loved the Smells Like Bakin project. I really felt like I was accomplishing something by replicating the site. I believe it should stay.
Gwendolyn Kelly
10,018 PointsSo to complete the track I need to do the new course?? :-( The time spent on Smells LIke Bakin is no longer being counted.
Andrew Chalkley
Treehouse Guest TeacherGwendolyn Kelly yep. Tracks are always being added to. Content will always be refreshed. Technology is about life long learning! If you had already completed the track you've got a head start!
Kalen Loncar
8,743 PointsIt's been over 24 hours, and the Rails track has still not been updated. If I start the jQuery Basics instead of the Build an Interactive Website, I should see the change by the time I'm done with the track, and shouldn't have to do the Build an Interactive Website as well. Is that correct Andrew Chalkley ?
Andrew Chalkley
Treehouse Guest TeacherTagging Jason Seifer - owner of the Rails track.
Kalen Loncar
8,743 PointsAndrew Chalkley Hello, I'm not trying to be pushy, but is it safe to say that since it's been over 48 hours since this post the track will not be updated? I started your jQuery Basics course yesterday. While I'm going to do it regardless, I would prefer to get through the track ASAP and would rather do your course once I'm done with the track, assuming it's not going to be updated. Thank you!
Steve Dirsa
12,584 PointsThe tracks WordPress and PHP still have the courses "Build an Interactive Website" and "Build an Responsive Website". I read that these courses are being removed from these tracks, and would be by now, however they are still there. Are they being removed from these particular tracks, and when? I plan on starting the WordPress track this week and they are the 2nd and 3rd courses...I don't want to take them if they will be removed shortly. I already took the new "How to Make a Website" and "JS Foundations/jQuery", are these the replacements?
Andrew Chalkley
Treehouse Guest TeacherTagging Zac Gordon and Hampton Paulk - owners of Wordpress and PHP tracks.
Thanks for letting us know Kalen Loncar and Steve Dirsa. They should be updated all being well on Monday.
Jill Marcum
16,088 PointsI really support your decision. The new modules are fantastic, and I feel the updated content makes Treehouse more trustworthy. Before, I wasn't confident that the skills/demos were up to date and I was worried I would embarrass myself if I built a portfolio off them. Good work. Thank you.
James Barnett
39,199 PointsI'm not sure any of the skills were out-of-date. There was an issue with the slider plugin used in one of the courses.
Jill Marcum
16,088 PointsI was attempting to provide positive feedback for the Treehouse team.
Loyd Looney
Courses Plus Student 7,956 PointsSpeaking from my perspective, you really need to make these kinds of changes count. I'm a bit annoyed that I have to start back over with what a DOCTYPE is in order to complete the track.
James Barnett
39,199 PointsIf it's checkmarks you are after you can just complete the code challenges (and any quizzes) for the new course, it will then be marked as complete.
Steve Dirsa
12,584 Points"Build a Responsive Website" and "Build an Interactive Website" still exist in the WordPress track. Are these being removed? If so, will anything be added?
Zac Gordon
Treehouse Guest TeacherSteve Dirsa yes those have disappeared from the WordPress track as well and replaced with these new courses: http://teamtreehouse.com/tracks/wordpress-development
vftwm
17,516 PointsZac Gordon I just followed your link, and like Steve Dirsa said "Build a Responsive Website" and "Build an Interactive Website" still appear. They were not replaced with "jQuery basics".
Steve Dirsa
12,584 PointsI just followed the link as well, as Fritz Pick said, "Build a Responsive Website" and "Build an Interactive Website" are still there. I even looked at them and they relate to "Smells Like Bacon".

39,261 PointsYes!!! Thank you! Although I did learn from all of those projects now I can build something that directly applies to me and that can be personalized as soon as you finish the course.

39,261 PointsIf Smells Like Bakin is going out of business does that mean there's a sale going on? I want some free cupcakes yo!
Anastasija Scepak
8,308 PointsI was lucky to learn from older courses and after that finish the new ones! Learned so much! Thank you! <3

32,599 PointsAre they being removed from the site completely or are they still going to be up but they just won't count towards any of the tracks?
Andrew Chalkley
Treehouse Guest TeacherYour will receive points for your Treehouse profile but won't count for the track anymore.
Mark Lavar
1,903 PointsI don't want the points; I just loved the project.
Andrew Chalkley
Treehouse Guest TeacherYou can still love the project! It's just not in the track anymore.

9,674 Pointsyes, that makes sense

18,889 PointsYou guys seriously just keep getting better and better, and I'm continuously getting more excited to support what you all are doing here at Treehouse. The new jQuery course, as well as the new track design, is something I've been looking forward to all week, and it's honestly looking awesome. Thanks for steadily improving! I've been here for 6(ish) months, and these are some of the best dollars I've ever spent.
I'm sorry the cupcakes are leaving us though. The Avocado Chocolate was good to me.

7,841 PointsDear treehouse, why did you retired smellslikebakin? is this way of creating websites out of date? what is the future roadmap for html5 and css3
Andrew Chalkley
Treehouse Guest TeacherT'was a little dated and we felt we could improve our student's experience more.
James Barnett

is this way of creating websites out of date?
The course yes, the methods of responsive design, no.
Paul Neumyer
15,301 PointsI like how you can take advantage of the new workspaces as you work through the exercises, something you could not do with the Smells Like Bakin website.
Andrew Chalkley
Treehouse Guest TeacherWorkspaces is awesome :)
Trent Burkenpas
22,388 PointsYeah Workspace makes the lessons very easy to follow. Instead of having to go in to your own text editor, you can just open workspace and all the files are there.
Jaap Steenis
Courses Plus Student 1,977 PointsThe world of HTML design is changing so does Treehouse that's no problem but I noticed that you teach advanced topics such as Responsive Design in the new basic HTML course. Can you tell me what the new release notes are for the latest course so I know what chapters I need to re-take ? I am currently in the Ruby On Rails Track with css stuff which is btw a very long and also very indepth track in which I am not going fast enough. Do I run the risk to get this course also not finalised with renewals soon?

8,923 PointsGlad to see these changes! After finishing the Web Design track and then moving to Front-End Web Development, a lot of redundant material was covered. This seems to solve that problem.

2,824 PointsLol, I just finished that section a few days ago. I am going to have to go back to complete it for the 100% and as a nice refresher to see what stuck and what didnt :)

4,388 PointsHey guys, I have already completed the Build a Simple Website & Build a Responsive Website in the Front-End Development Track.
I will finish Introduction To Programming and Javascript Foundations (from the Front-End Development Track) by the end of the week.
With the knowledge gained from these courses, do you believe I should still complete both Build an Interactive Website followed by jQuery Basics? Or would I be wasting my time and should just focus on completing jQuery Basics and skipping Build an Interactive Website?
FYI - Bear in mind that I won't have the time to go back and do How To Make A Website before completing the Javacript/jQuery courses listed above.
James Barnett
39,199 PointsHow To Make A Website & jQuery Basics are unrelated unlike the Build a Simple Website, Build a Responsive Website & Build an Interactive Website.
So you'll probably have a better experience following the current track which removes Build an Interactive Website in favor of jQuery Basics.
Jon W
6,185 PointsLoved this course, it's where I learnt about responsive design.
Oh well, I never liked bacon flavoured cupcakes ;)
Thomas Quayle
4,388 PointsOK, thanks James.
I also noticed you have put Sass Basics at the end of the Front-End Development Track. Personally, I am happy to see that, because that was the course I was trying to skip past and come back to at the end.
Sacha Bobrovnitchi
10,803 PointsHi, will there be another tutorial for the google map integration, or no need because the code used is up to date? Would you use the same code (e.g. the iframe) for all of the features implemented.
Andrew Chalkley
Treehouse Guest TeacherPossibly...we're going to focus a little more on jQuery for a bit before we branch off in to using a third party API like Google Maps. If we were to cover it again it would be it's own course rather than intermingled with a project like it was in Build an Interactive Website.
I would still use an iFrame for responsive maps.
Rasmus Willemoes Paulsen
12,436 PointsI think the new track with Nick is super cool! Even though it's a little too basic for me, and that I miss Allison! She was great. I really dig the ability to follow along with "Workspaces" on my 2nd monitor :)
Keep it up treehouse :)
Alain Alemany
4,094 PointsGuys I really think you need to re-think this. Those projects has been incredible huge for me. The way you explain thing there is incredible and noob-proof. I really think it should stay. You can add whatever you want, but don't remove those.
It's my opinion.
Jaap Steenis
Courses Plus Student 1,977 Points100 % agree, from previous posts I read that the course parts are withdrawn from the tracks but remain available ti access.
