Overview

Treehouse is looking for an Engineering Manager with experience managing a high-performing team. It’s great if that experience was with an engineering team but if you've been the people manager for other types of teams, keep reading.

The ideal candidate is able to lead people and projects to deliver a product roadmap that exceeds expectations and achieves the company’s mission. They demonstrate mastery in regard to the professional growth of their team and managing projects to meet business needs. They have an exceptional ability to foster and maintain highly collaborative and effective relationships across disciplines and departments.

Responsibilities

People Leadership
  • Provides guidance and goal setting for team members to encourage professional development and advancement in their development, design or operations skills.
  • Provides support and coaching via weekly one-on-one meetings.
  • Recruits and hires exceptional engineers that complement Treehouse teams.
  • Conducts annual performance reviews, including making recommendations for promotions and merit increases.
  • Develops performance improvement plans and conducts terminations as needed.
Project Leadership
  • Manages physically distributed engineering teams in the development of requirements, architecture, system design, implementation and testing of high-quality products to deliver product roadmap commitments.
  • Partners with Product Owner, Product Management, and Customer Representatives to acquire an understanding of functional and nonfunctional requirements.
  • Ensures engineering projects conform to Treehouse defined development methodologies and standards.
  • Provides daily project management of teams with regards to planning, risk mitigation, course corrections and providing transparent status updates to the business.
  • Coordinates efforts with cross-functional stakeholders to ensure successful product delivery.
Process Improvement
  • Leads planning and implementation of new engineering processes, tools, and technology adoption.
Trust and Dependability
  • Provides leadership on projects that enable Engineering teams to meet their commitments.
  • Provides accurate status of multiple project teams and cross-project team engineering efforts inside and outside of the Engineering department.
  • Develops Engineering best practices that support business goals.
  • Proactively identifies problems that may impact multiple teams.
  • Effectively communicates and partners with teammates, manager, and stakeholders to achieve individual, team, and project goals.
  • Effectively works in a distributed team environment.
  • Demonstrates the ability to adapt as the external environment and organization evolves.
  • Coaches others as needed through times of change.
Demonstration of Treehouse Mission and Values
  • Actively demonstrates the Treehouse Mission and Values in daily work.
  • Develops Engineering projects and initiatives that reflect the Treehouse Mission and Values.
  • Serves as a role model to others living these values.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of people and project management experience or equivalent
  • Demonstrated experience building and managing a high-performing, distributed team
  • Proven track record of delivering high visibility projects on time, budget and quality
  • Ability to multi-task across multiple projects, initiatives, and/or teams
  • Strong customer orientation. Skilled in developing an understanding of customer needs and identifying optimal technology solutions
  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills, as well as demonstration of professional conduct and situational awareness
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to both technical and non-technical audience
Preferred but not required for the right candidate:
  • Experience developing web applications as a designer, developer, manager or equivalent experience. Experience with modern web frameworks (such as Ruby on Rails) preferred
