[Careers Foundations] [with Dan Gorgone] 0:00 [Setting Your Course] [Deep Dive] 0:02 Now that we have a better idea about the various jobs in the tech industry, 0:04 the path might be a bit clearer. 0:09 There may be one ideal job that you can see yourself in right now 0:11 or perhaps a number of them in a particular area of expertise. 0:15 Just keep in mind that an important part of setting your course 0:20 is learning to focus on one direction 0:24 and letting some of the other options go. 0:26 This should be easier to do if you're truly passionate about a potential position. 0:29 So if you're not sure, reevaluate what means most to you for a career. 0:34 It doesn't mean you're eliminating job options forever. 0:38 Being focused will simply help you move forward with the process. 0:42 One important step is identifying your own strengths and weaknesses. 0:46 Treehouse's Nick Pettit faced his own challenge of weighing 0:51 his various skills and passions, and he used one particular activity 0:54 to help him discover ideas on the direction he ended up considering. 0:58 When Nick was considering potential career choices, 1:02 he grouped his interests within a Venn diagram 1:06 in an effort to find some overlap. 1:09 First he considered the things he liked doing. 1:11 Activities like web design, education, playing video games, 1:14 filmmaking, and watching TV all made the list. 1:18 Next he considered activities he was good at. 1:22 Again web design, education, and playing video games made the list, 1:26 but he also added computer repair and paying bills. 1:31 Finally he thought about activities that people have a need for. 1:35 There is certainly a demand for web design and education 1:39 as well as computer repair, 1:43 but there's also a demand for things like food and health care. 1:45 When Nick considered how the three sets of activities align, 1:48 it was easy to see that some activities fell into more than one circle. 1:52 These represent potential opportunities, 1:56 but only two activities were in all three areas: Web design and education. 1:59 By laying out interests and activities in this way, 2:05 a possible direction for his career became clear. 2:09 So not everyone can simply jump into their dream job. 2:12 Identifying strengths and weaknesses, figuring out what's missing 2:17 can help set a path for future jobs as well as personal development. 2:21 Therefore consider the following questions: 2:26 What do you need to get from where you are right now 2:29 to where you want to be? 2:33 Is it education or training? Do you need more work or project experience? 2:35 Or is it all of the above? 2:40 Since you've chosen to focus on the tech industry, 2:43 Treehouse is certainly a great way to improve your skills 2:46 whether you want to be a designer, developer, build apps, 2:49 or manage related projects. 2:53 In our upcoming videos, we'll discuss how to help yourself identify ways 2:56 to figure out what else you need to do and where you can get help. 3:00
