Sign upIf you've ever thought about building websites or 0:00 mobile apps as a career, you might be wondering how all of the many tools, 0:02 languages, and jobs in the tech industry fit together. 0:06 Let's start with the three most common types of projects. 0:09 Mobile apps, websites, and web apps. 0:12 You probably already know what mobile apps are. 0:16 They are the apps you use on your SmartPhone or 0:19 other device, like SnapChat or Instagram. 0:21 To build a mobile app, you first have to choose whether you'll start with 0:24 an app for the iPhone or iPad, or Android phones or tablets. 0:27 Building an iPhone app requires a Mac computer, and a free program called Xcode. 0:32 You'll use Xcode to write your app in a programming language called Swift. 0:37 Once you've finished your app, you can sell it for real money in the App Store. 0:42 You'll upload your app to the App Store, and 0:46 once it's been approved by Apple, you're ready to start selling it. 0:48 Creating an app for Android devices is a similar process using a Mac or Windows PC. 0:53 Android apps are built in a free program called Android Studio 0:58 using a language called Java. 1:02 Let's move on to building websites. 1:04 Websites are built in text editors, using a combination of languages, 1:07 such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. 1:11 These are some of the easiest languages to learn. 1:14 And getting your first basic website online is something anyone can do. 1:16 If you wanna add interactivity to your website, like the ability for users to 1:21 login and create accounts, then what you really want to build is a web app. 1:24 Facebook, Twitter, and Google Maps are all examples of popular web apps. 1:29 Web apps are created with text editors much like normal websites are, 1:34 except web apps are built using more powerful programming languages, 1:38 such as Ruby, PHP, or Python. 1:42 You'll also need a database, which stores all of the information that 1:45 powers your site, like user account details or pictures. 1:48 Now, let's talk about the most common types of jobs in the tech industry. 1:52 Mobile apps, websites, and 1:57 web apps are built by designers, front-end developers, and back-end developers. 1:58 Designers are focused on the way things look and behave. 2:04 They create the visual design of apps and 2:08 websites using tools like Photoshop and Illustrator. 2:10 If you've ever noticed how nice a website looks, or 2:13 how easy to use a mobile app is, you can thank the designer. 2:15 Once a design has been created, a front-end developer takes the design, and 2:19 turns it into code a browser can understand, using HTML, CSS, 2:23 and Javascript. 2:27 Often, a designer and a front-end developer are actually the same person, 2:29 both creating the design and turning it into functional front-end code. 2:34 And finally, we have the back-end developer. 2:38 They're the ones who add web app functionality to a website, 2:41 connecting it to a database, and 2:44 writing the code that makes it possible to log in and create accounts. 2:46 All of this is done using some of the more powerful languages we mentioned earlier, 2:50 Ruby, Python, PHP, and Java, just to name a few. 2:54 Designers, front-end developers, and 2:59 back-end developers are the backbone of the tech industry. 3:01 Treehouse teaches all the skills you need to start a new 3:05 career in the exciting world of technology. 3:08
