No matter what kind of video you’re producing, many aspects of a successful production are the same. As such, there are three basic stages to all video productions you can consider when planning and organizing your video shoot.
Things to Consider
- Do you have a location where you could shoot a video that you control, such as an office, conference room, or outside location?
- Would one of your videos require you to script out the content, or could it be more improvised (e.g. interviews, conversations)?

many aspects of a successful production are the same.

As such, there are 3 basic stages to all video productions,
0:06
you can consider when planning and organizing
0:10
your video shoot. [clapperboard sound]
0:13
Pre-production is the period of time
0:17
when you prepare everything,
0:19
from writing your script, making arrangements for locations,
0:21
schedules, actors, equipment,
0:24
and, especially, your budget.
0:27
This also includes creating any special elements
0:29
that will be featured in the video,
0:32
such as props, signs, and other materials.
0:34
Many video productions are successful
0:37
because the people responsible
0:39
prepared well,
0:41
which means that pre-production is incredibly important.
0:43
Production is when you shoot and create
0:47
all of the pieces that make up your video.
0:50
Every piece needs to be accounted for
0:53
in the script you prepare,
0:55
so when it comes time to shoot
0:57
you know where to go, who is in it,
0:59
what materials and equipment you need,
1:01
and exactly what you need to get done.
1:03
Post-production is the part of the process
1:07
where you take everything you've created
1:10
and piece it together, arranging it into its final form.
1:12
Editing video and audio together
1:16
while adding your branding, graphics, music, and other elements
1:18
gives it a polish that sets it apart from competitors.
1:21
So, here are some tips for your own production.
1:26
If you've never produced a video before,
1:30
do a test video to get yourself acclimated with the process.
1:32
Create something short and simple and you'll see how things look
1:37
on camera, what it takes to get the shots you need,
1:40
and how to piece things together when you edit.
1:42
It won't take long to see how things like lighting, sound, and editing
1:46
can truly make or break a video.
1:51
When you're ready to shoot,
1:53
create a schedule for yourself
1:55
so you don't fall behind.
1:57
You want to make sure you get the best footage possible,
1:59
but keep your timeline in mind
2:01
and be ready to move forward once you've got what you needed.
2:03
Also, prepare for problems
2:07
along the way.
2:09
Do you have control over your location?
2:11
And if not, who does
2:13
and how do you contact them?
2:15
Who will bring the equipment and run it?
2:17
Do you have all the supplies you need,
2:20
including access to things like power
2:22
or extra batteries?
2:24
And, ultimately, who is in charge at your shoot?
2:26
Someone has to make decisions,
2:30
especially if problems arise.
2:32
So, make sure everyone is clear
2:34
about who's calling the shots.
2:36
Finally, after shooting is done
2:39
and editing is underway,
2:41
you should begin to have a sense
2:43
about what your finished product will look like.
2:45
If you've outsourced your production,
2:47
stay on top of things and make sure you know what you're getting,
2:49
but understand that editing can be a complex process.
2:52
If it's not coming along as expected,
2:56
you might have to redo parts of the video,
2:58
but as long as you've prepared and executed
3:01
according to your plans,
3:04
your video should come to life as expected.
