In this video, you'll learn how to install a Ruby on Rails Development Environment in Ubuntu.

Pre Install Checklist
sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade
Add apt repositories
From the Brightbox site.
sudo apt-get install software-properties-common
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:brightbox/ruby-ng
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ruby2.2 ruby2.2-dev
sudo apt-get install ruby-switch
sudo apt-get install bundler
sudo ruby-switch --set ruby2.2
ruby -v
Install Other Dependencies
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install git-core curl zlib1g-dev build-essential libssl-dev libreadline-dev libyaml-dev libsqlite3-dev sqlite3 libxml2-dev libxslt1-dev libcurl4-openssl-dev python-software-properties libffi-dev
Install MySQL

Install Rails

Create a new app
mkdir projects
cd projects
rails new testapp

In this workshop, we're going to install
and setup a Ruby and

Ruby on Rails Development Environment in
Ubuntu Linux.

We're going to download and install Ruby
and Ruby on Rails,

a few different databases and we'll also
install and configure Git.

Download a text editor and then generate a
quick Ruby

on Rails application just to make sure
everything's working.

Lets go ahead and get started.

So now we're gonna learn how to install a
Ruby

on Rails Development Environment on Linux.

This is Ubuntu desktop version 14.04.

And for the most part all, of this stuff
is going to be done in the terminal.

So click on that icon on the top left
there and

if you don't see terminal in your
applications,

you can start typing terminal and then
open it up.

So now, a lot of this stuff you can copy

We're going to use the BrightBox Ruby
packages to install Ubuntu.

BrightBox is a hosting company that is
nice

enough to provide Ubuntu in Debian
packages for

Ruby and a few different versions.

Now they have instructions on their page
about how to get this all done.

So we can go ahead and follow those.

We'll need to install different apt
repositories and this is pretty easy.

Copy and paste that, then we add the
repository.

Now we can update the system.

Depending on how long it's been since
you've done an update of

the repositories, this may take a little
while.

Now, once we have done that, we've added
the BrightBox repositories,

we can go ahead and install Ruby.

Let's go ahead and see how we do that.

We're going to wanna use version Ruby 2.2,

that's really all we need to install right
now.

So we can go ahead and just apt-get
install it.

We want to allow that space to be taken
up, so

that should install Ruby 2.2.

And now, if we do Ruby 2.2 -v,

it will show that we are using Ruby 2.2.2
patch level 95.

That is what we want.

But there are a couple of other items that
we want to install along with that.

And that is going to be the development
headers for Ruby 2.2 and

the development libraries.

That's going to allow us to install
different gems that may depend on those.

And then we also want to install Bundler.

extensively by Rails and most Ruby
libraries.

And once that’s installed, we want to
install something,

this is specific to bright box called
ruby-switch.

Which is going to switch the version of
Ruby for

us automatically to whatever we specify,
which is going to be ruby2.2.

So, instead of typing ruby2.2 all the
time, we can just type ruby.

So, once we install ruby-switch, [NOISE]
we can

say sudo ruby-switch and set it to
ruby2.2.

Now, if we type ruby -v, we can see we get
the version we were using before.

So the next thing that we need to do is
install some other dependencies, like Git.

Now we need to install more than just that
package.

So let's go ahead and update every thing.

different packages.

This isn't totally necessary, you can use
SQLite 3.

Lots of people like to install MySQL, so
we require the MySQL server,

As this is installing, it will ask us to
configure it.

I'm not setting a root password right now
for demonstration purposes, but

this is insecure and you should set a root
password.

Now that we've installed MySQL, we're
getting really close here.

Let's go ahead and install wget curl and
imagemagick.

Again, these are not directly related to
Rails, but

they do make it easier to have in your
Rails development environment.

Now we're gonna configure Git.

I'm gonna configure it to have my name be

Then pass in user.name and your name and

gemrc file and what that does is

specifies that we don't wanna document our
gems when we install them.

and this is doing to

Well, it looks like we need to run this
command gem pristine --all.

So let's go ahead and copy that and

Now, it looks like we don't have
permissions for that,

so we'll type sudo gem pristine --all.

Now Rails comes with something called
spring.

Spring runs in the background and keeps
the rails libraries loaded.

And only will reload your application
files,

as you're going along and recoding your
app.

Now since the Rails library files may have
changed when we're doing this

gem pristine all command, we're going to
have to stop spring once this finishes.

So, I'm gonna clear my screen here and
