Scoping a Project and Designing Iconography1:52 with Allison Grayce Marshall
In this video we go behind the scenes of Code Racer and talk to Allison Grayce about the icons that she designed for the weapons.

Music ?] [Code Racer] [Behind the Scenes with Allison Grayce] 0:00 I worked really closely with Mat and Tyson when working on 0:04 the user interface for Code Racer, 0:07 and one of my responsibilities was working with the weapons. 0:10 We needed to decide not only what effect using the weapons 0:14 would have on their opponent but also what they would look like visually 0:18 and then what iconography would represent these weapons best in their arsenal. 0:21 We also wanted to make sure that we didn't slow down the user too much 0:26 as a consequence of using the weapons, so we wanted to make sure 0:29 that the iconography was very clear, concise, and to the point 0:32 so they could quickly scan it and then use it on their opponent without having to 0:36 think about it too much. 0:39 We had a lot of fun coming up with different ideas for what types of 0:41 weapons that we could create, but we had to be realistic. 0:45 We had to decide what we could actually develop, 0:48 what would be interesting visually, and then what we could 0:51 actually achieve during the time constraint. 0:54 For launch, we narrowed our ideas down to 4 weapons. 0:56 Comic Sans-ian turns your opponent's code into Comic Sans, 1:00 and we all know it's not just the worst font to code in. 1:03 The snot rocket lets you clear your nose of unmentionables 1:05 onto your opponent's code for 10 seconds. 1:08 Eww! 1:10 We all know the internet loves cats, though I'm more of a dog person myself. 1:12 This weapon makes it rain cats on your opponent's screen 1:15 and meows through their speakers for 10 seconds. 1:17 The blizzard weapon takes your opponent out cold with snowflakes 1:20 covering their screen for 10 seconds. 1:23 When I created these icons, I knew I wanted to use super simple shapes 1:25 that would be quickly identified with what effect they might have as a weapon. 1:28 It was also important that they be simple because certain shapes 1:32 like the snot rocket would need to be used at both small and large scales. 1:35 Being that they were for a game, I knew I had way more freedom with the color palette, 1:39 so I took advantage of this and used bright complementary colors. 1:43 We're going to take a look at how I went about designing the Code Racer icons 1:46 by creating our very own food icon set. 1:49
