There are quite a few frameworks for developing native hybrid apps like the one you mentioned(PhoneGap). A lot of it is going to have to do with what your preferences are, and what it is you're trying to accomplish.

Some popular ones including but not limited to:

  • IONIC
  • React Native
  • NativeScript
  • Titanium

In my humble opinion React Native looks really promising especially in comparison to PhoneGap since it's actually rendering a native app and not a responsive webapp, it also runs a lot faster!.. It uses Javascript code, CSS type styling and HTML type tags(JSX) for creating layouts. However you might want to have a good understanding of other frameworks like React and NodeJS before you jump into it if you haven't already. Again this is just my suggestion and opinion.
