Techdegree program

Hi there whats peoples views on this new Techdegree program that's in beta? is it worth paying for and will it be recognized by future employers?

Well it sounds like the program can take around a year to complete, so you wont get many strong reviews just yet as most people are still working there way through it. And even then you still will need to see people take what they learn and apply it to there career. I will say so far I have gotten a thorough understanding of every thing that they have taught, the projects really force me to prove my self to my self, and I even get a critique of my work. Im preety self motivated and the $100 a month makes me really want to get through the program fast. When it comes do to it is what you make of it.

Think of it from an employer's standpoint. If you have something to make you look a little better to them it can't hurt. Now from the personal perspective, can you show off your skill set well enough without that program so that you don't need it to stand out? If you can put together an awesome portfolio showing off your skills and go out and make connections with other developers in the online community and with whoever you would like to work with than I'd say that it may not be necessary. However, if you think that it will be valuable enough to your overall development as a coder then I say GO FOR IT!! That's my view. It's all about progress.

Its seems to be a good way to build a portfolio. However there are other schools that you can build a much bigger portfolio for free. Although those schools are not as good for learning as Treehouse.

I plan on learning everything here and then going there and going through that program and building 30+ projects ranging from small apps to working with a team to build live websites.

can you give me examples of those programs?

The one I am referring to in particular is Free Code Camp. It is very community based. Part of their curriculum is working on a team to build a website for a Non-profit organization. In fact to "graduate" from their program you have to complete 2 of those. Which they estimate will take around 400 hours to complete. Which is great experience.

Having said that. To get to that point you either have to go through all of their schooling first or prove you already know it. I have tried their classes and find that Treehouse is light years ahead of them in terms of learning. But they are better for building your portfolio. One of the projects you have to do is actually design, build and launch your own portfolio site.

Code Camp is much more linear in its approch. But that is also because the only have 1 goal. To teach you how to be a Full Stack Web developer focusing only on the MEAN stack.

Whats the major difference between this and the other front-end tracks?

It looks like with this instead of being handed 85% of the code for a site and then working with the teacher to fill in the rest. You are given image files and told to build the site yourself and are then graded on your work.

Of course this is after you learn how to do it all.

So kinda think of it as a homework assignment that you can add to your portfolio.

It's LIVE!
