im getting a parse error from my code

It works just fine the way you did it the first time. In fact it is the "idiomatic" way to do it. Using anonymous functions is very common usage pattern for registering event handlers in JS. Just look at my response below.

You have an extra closing parenthesis after the URL string (which is the first argument for the $get method); please remove it. It should look like this:

$.get("footer.html", function (response){
});
