Hello all, I want to start off and thank all the people whom helped make this website possible, I have been in a dead end field for years and although i don't know alot about web design I'm having fun learning and learning alot. so my question is once I'm done learning the tracks I would like to learn, getting help building a portfolio is that really enough to get your foot in the door of a good company? I have read up on these forums about people asking about various certifications out there for web design. the no so good ones. so I wanted to know if the CIW|Web Design Professional Cert (http://www.ciwcertified.com/certifications/web_design_series/design_professional.php) was a ligament certification and if it would help get a job after I'm done learning everything on here I want to learn.
thanks again for this wonderful site.

2,085 PointsWell I personaly don't believe in certifcates just have a good portfolio if your portfolio is good then thats all you should need. Put it this way what would a company rather do hire someone who can do the job without a problem but no certifcate but a good portfolio or someone with a fancy certifcate.
You answer.

But, a portfolio of work should still speak volumes greater than any certification. Best to conduct the job search even now, and see if any ideal employers are even looking for certifications. If they don't mention one, it probably wasn't as important as demonstrable skills.

"W3Schools offers certifications whose value is highly debatable"

4,184 PointsThank you for that. While I wouldn't also recommend w3fools' alternate recommendations, like anything, W3Schools is showing its age in today's web. But I digress. WebPlatform is nice, but could afford to grow substantially.
We do not warrant the correctness of [W3Schools] content. The risk from using it lies entirely with the user.

11,536 PointsThat's absolutely right. The only thing what counts is your portfolio. To be honest, it's just a waste of money, nothing else.
If you have skills, just show them in action!
