AJAX and PHP

When I send a ajax post request (jquery) to the page, it triggers the php to be run again. This is a problem because it calls a function that generates a new token. How do I stop the ajax from running the php?

I am currently using this:

if(empty($_SERVER['HTTP_X_REQUESTED_WITH'])) { $csrf_token = Token::generate(); }

However, this seems messy and bad practice ?
