You should take the front-end development course in my opinion. I did the same and found that knowing some Programing concepts such as arrays, classes and objects are very very help. You will pick up the terminology much quicker.

Also, make sure you take the console foundations courses as they play a big part in Ruby dev.

Funny you should say that, because only yesterday I had the exact same quandry. After posting up some questions I got a convincing reply from one of the moderators, which has led me to start the front-end development track. See Andrew Molloy's comments (particularly the second one) here:

It just depends on your goals. Is there a particular project that you'd like to start working on? Or are you looking for work in a particular area? Focus on what you need to learn to achieve your objectives.

I personally do not think you must take the front-end track before Rails but I can see how some may feel that way. In either case I think the important thing is that you be patient and make sure you practice and understand the content in each course well. That will take time and effort in both cases.

If you need any help with the front end stuff on a project you are working on then please message me! I would be interested in helping. :D
