Gunhoo is correct. From the command like you can also type man followed by a command. It will print out instructions for how the command works and what the flags are

man mkdir

it will output:

 -p, --parents
              no error if existing, make parent directories as needed

It is shorthand for parents. Make parent directory if needed.
