Any professional developers that have went through a phone interview?

A company I applied to for an entry-level back-end PHP developer position contacted me today. They're going to contact me again tomorrow to schedule a phone interview with a developer.

Can someone who's went through the process give me an idea about what to expect?

This is my first time going through a developer interview process and I'm feeling nervous and really excited.

Any help you can give me would be awesome.

I've done this a few times. Depending on the interviewer, expect some combination of these elements:

  • Questions about prior job positions and responsibilities
  • Questions about familiarity with specific technologies/APIs/IDE's/tools/etc.
  • Questions about specific related accomplishments
  • Questions about lessons learned from past mistakes
  • A brief "quiz" with questions like (and possibly actually taken from) a certification exam

A developer isn't likely to ask the typical "HR" questions, but they might have one or two of those also.

Hi Roy,

I found your website quite amusing also (though it could use a few JQuery accordion "collapsibles"

to be "hiring manager ready" --these people hate to scroll more down more than a few screen-fulls worth to find what they are looking for (specifically in regard to keywords).


I would take exception to your use of the term " phone interview".

I would argue that using that term in 2016 gives the wrong idea of what really/exactly it is.

I would say the correct term (used by most HR reps) is "phone screen".


The initial phone call (as done by most professional recruiters...and HR reps

inside a company) is just following a checklist.

The answers to this checklist do not get you the job.

They can only screen you from going further in the hiring process (which can be very long and ardous in some cases).


What the checklist (and the answers) you give are designed to

is screen out the "crazies" and the those who are "phone etiquette incompetent".


Think about it: If it were just a matter of answering background questions that could be done via email (but never is).

Rather, they they are just as interested (if not more so) in your

"verbal affectations" as they in verifying info you put on your resume.

The phone screen is a least 50% (and probably closer to 80%) about social skills,

rather than about technical expertise (which most HR representatives

don't have the skills or training to effectively screen for).


What I would call the "interview" part of the hiring process

(the part where you are being "screened in" for a position rather than "screened out")

happens usually much later...probably when you meet with a hiring manager

for the department/section of the company you will eventually (maybe) going to be working for.


Note:

It's not my intention to be "picky" about terminology,

but the "hiring game" since the Great Recession has a got a lot more refined and systematized

as has 'verbiage' related to different parts of the hiring process.

Yeah, i found the website a bit uhh about the scrolling. Other than that it;s awesome.

Maybe something that will scroll of the user and make some sections?

So like

href="#skill" and so on.. transparent menu on side or whatever.

Just on the scrolling part. Other than that i like it, it's different. Creative. Stands out. If id had to write a blog about cool sites id get that site.
