Anyone have any good basic for running a server?

I am starting to learn what I want to do either does not work on shared hosting plans, but the jump to a VPS has a whole new set of skills to learn. I do not have speficic questions but I don't know what I don't now.

I just know that their are different OS's to choose and they all have different ways of running task,

I am hoping that Treehouse will soon have a Track on running a server, now I the morning I think about the more hosting companies put it on us to run our own servers.

What do you want to do that you think you need to run a server?

Just like with software development, there are a lot of different tools, setups, types, categories and such to look into. What you want to do will determine where to look.

I have an older copy of this book book that I found super useful. That may get you started if you are looking at using Linux. It almost certainly won't be everything you need though.

Thanks for the quick response.

Well when running rails on a server I am not sure how to make that service start on boot.

This is not a simple task to deploy a rails app on to a server from what I read, and there can be a large amount of variables on top of that.

Here is a tutorial that might work, and possibly lead you in the right direction: https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-configure-a-linux-service-to-start-automatically-after-a-crash-or-reboot-part-1-practical-examples

Also, have you considered using something like Heroku instead of running your own server?

I have not found many hosting companies that will let me run Ruby in a shared hosting environment. But when you use hosting that will let me run Ruby it is a VPS and they usually will not help with setting on the server.

So I feel like I have to learn how to run a server just to use Ruby and Python.
