Anyone know why my .attr statement isn't working?

I'm working on the jQuery code challenge where you have to add a target attribute of "_blank" to a class of links.

My code is:

$("#external").attr("target","_blank");

When I hit check work, I get:

Bummer! I was expecting "_blank" not " ".

I get the same response no matter what I put in for the second argument.

js/app.js
$("#external").attr("target","_blank");
index.html
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
  <link rel="stylesheet" href="css/style.css" type="text/css" media="screen" title="no title" charset="utf-8">
  <title>Links Page</title>
</head>
<body>
  <h1>Links</h1>
  <ul>
    <li><a href="http://google.com" class="external">Google</a></li>
    <li><a href="http://yahoo.com" class="external">Yahoo</a></li>
  </ul>
  <script src="//code.jquery.com/jquery-1.11.0.min.js" type="text/javascript" charset="utf-8"></script>
  <script src="js/app.js" type="text/javascript" charset="utf-8"></script>
</body>
</html>
