Anywhere I can post a success story?

I just landed a job as an Apprentice Software Developer from my previous career as a Distribution Quality Manager! I just want to thank the Treehouse Staff for doing what they do and of course the moderators for looking into my endless questions. For anyone out their looking for a career it it possible with Treehouse! Roughly 1 year ago i decided I am going to go into web development with no prior knowledge, Treehouse have definitely educated me for about 9 months of the 12 and that's only because I've been busy with other stuff going on here and there.

Is there an email address I can send this success story too? Or will the forum be just fine?

MANY THANKS to all the team for supporting me in a big career change.

Adam

I think community@treehouse.com would be a good place to start.

Many congratulations on your new job. :)

Email sent, but it rejected the email and said it failed, any ideas?

Cheers Jesus, of course! That's the most fun part!

Congratulations, Adam! I'd be interested in hearing more about your self-education process and how the career search went. If that's already been part of other posts, could someone please direct me? I really want to make this career switch, but am feeling a bit overwhelmed on how to focus on a path (what do I really need to know to be effective in the market, etc.), and how to find that great employer willing to take on a newbie. Thanks!

Hey Queenpin, from the knowledge I have so far I would suggest you pick a route of designer or developer and focus on it. Once you've nailed the skills a designer/developer needs start making projects for an online portfolio to prove your capable of delivering results from the skills you've learned. Then start freelancing for free for as many people as you can, if you can see a website needs improving give them a call and tell them your story and that you will make it better for them free of charge, it's a win win! I've spent approximately the last 9 months applying for junior only roles, I've heard very little back but from my experience I may make a weak junior application but a very strong apprenticeship application. As long as you can get your foot in the door and prove you were worthy of the position mission accomplished! Of course I need a part time job now but If you really want a career in the web industry I'm sure you will do what it takes! I only freelanced for 2-3 months so I didn't have much to show but if I carried on I reckon I might have made a junior position in time.

In terms of self education the best I could advise is get stuck in there! If you want to learn Sass download scout and start writing out some Sass and making small practice applications. My point is if you read about something before you give it a try theres a chance you might scare yourself off. I thought angular.js was horrible at first and I avoided it for far too long! Once I actually spent twenty minutes attempting to make something with someones code It just clicked and made sense.

Keep applying for the experience, keep learning for the knowledge and keep coding for the portfolio. Good Luck :)

I too am avoiding Angular because I've looked at it twice now and can't get beyond 2 way data binding!

How did you do it? :-)

Steal some code from the actual angular.js site, theres a few good examples from easy to complex, put them into codepen and have a play around, i got it within a day like that! I find reading about or or watching examples makes no sense! Once you get it go back to the videos :)

Will look into it when I switch my focus back to JavaScript, thanks. :) I'd like to get my head around it, definitely.

Good points, Adam - Thank you!!
