Are Ads Really UX Content?

In reference to the lesson, Understanding Users and Content in the UX Basics Course: https://teamtreehouse.com/library/ux-basics/what-do-ux-designers-do/understanding-users-and-content

Lis uses the term "content: with a broad meaning but notes, "Content the product will need to have in order to facilitate solving the user's problem" So unless the ads do this, should they still be considered as "valuable content" to a UX designer?

This video refers to ads as content and as I heard this I instantly felt a strange reaction. I've always known ads to be antagonistic to content. It's usually exactly what users aren't looking for when browsing articles and using websites. I know Ads CAN be content but I mean how ads typically perform: reading about a friend's vacation on Facebook and then being shown a toothbrush. I know sometimes advertising can be deeply integrated with content like a sponsorship or accurately targeted in a way that it doesn't feel distracting, but actually relevant and helpful. However this is, at least in my known experience, rarely the case and a difficult hurdle for advertisers. Banner ads are surely "content" in the sense that they fill space on a page, but to me it seems more like "noise" when thinking about content in terms of value to a UX.

I'm sorry! I meant to attach this ask to the video community, https://teamtreehouse.com/community/video:8882 but I seemed to post it to the general design community by accident.

My $0.02. If you show ads on your site then they are obviously part of your site's content. The kinds of ads you display and how you display them will affect how a user thinks of and interacts with your site. If you say "I've always known ads to be antagonistic to content," then how is that not part of the user experience?

I'd say they are part of the content. It's something that the user is going to see, and how they are shown will impact their experience.

The way I see it is more of a "layout" approach, considering size and placement of the ads on a page can be part of the UX design. Just my opinion. Cheers.
