Are you really handed a template to add interactivity?

When I look at job listings they seem to want you to have knowledge of the whole process (HTML, CSS, Javascript etc). In the real world, does it really work like he says where you basically have your niche and stay relatively close to that niche or do you do the design and interactivity?

Hi there Kevin,

From my experience I would like to add that it really depends on the agency/company that you are working for. A personal example - in the current agency that I work, there is a creative team which deals only with visualisation of the designs and an user experience designer that coordinates and explains the functionality of the designs. In short let's say that I design the interface of a form/slider or any other UI component/website. After that I export an image file usually a Sketch/PS file and pass it to the front-end development team and they code the experience from the ground up with html/css/js or other technologies.

On the other hand, while I was part of a startup company, since I am also doing front-end, I was responsible for the whole website that we had to create: design, user experience and even coding the interface. I had a technical co-founder who coded the back-end functionality(like business logic and server side) of the website. Depending on the team's size the smaller the team is the more likely it is for you to have an inter disciplinary tasks such as designing and coding at the same time. The larger the team is the members are more likely to be highly specialised in a particular field.

To sum up, it really depends from the company that you are part of, but if you are going to freelance I believe that most of the projects you would have to come up with the concept and not simply expect to have a already done design in html/css or mockup/image showing how it is supposed to look or what is it supposed to do.

Cheers!

I'm subscribed to this guy on Youtube. In this video he explains what is expect of web developers for both the front end and back end. The video is over 20 minutes long, but it's worth a watch.

It really depends on how big the company is (and or the proyect) normally on a small one you have to be pretty much everything, but when there is a design department you only add functionality or at least they give you the image on how it is supposed to look like :P
